At VCA San Francisco Veterinary Specialists, we strive to make your pet’s stay as comfortable as possible. Our doctors and support team look forward to working with you to ensure that your pet receives the best possible care.
The following information is provided to help you better understand our hospital’s policies and procedures. We welcome any questions or concerns that you might have. Thank you for entrusting us with your pet’s care.
VISITING YOUR HOSPITALIZED PETWe recognize the important bond between you and your pet, and we welcome you to visit your pet while s/he is in the hospital.
Our recommended visiting hours are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., and we ask that you call before your visit to allow time for us to get your pet set up comfortably for your arrival.
To ensure quality care to all our hospitalized patients, we ask that you limit your visit to 20 minutes twice a day. If your pet is unable to leave the treatment area due to his/her condition, please be aware that no minors are permitted in the treatment area.
In some cases, visits may be reduced based on your pet’s needs. Our patients usually require 6 to 12 hours of reduced stimulation following anesthesia. We generally discourage visitation during that recovery period.
Please keep in mind that patient care is our primary concern. Emergencies and other critical patients may occasionally delay your visit, and may necessitate modification of visiting hours.
We understand that you want your pet to be as comfortable as possible during his/her hospital stay. We do ask, however, that you do not leave any personal belongings at our hospital. We will provide your pet with comfortable bedding and leads, so we kindly ask that you leave personal bedding, leashes and harnesses at home. This will ensure that none of your belongings accidentally get soiled, damaged or lost.
TELEPHONE COMMUNICATIONOur technicians welcome your phone calls for patient updates at all hours, even in the middle of the night.
Doctors are in patient rounds from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. every day. They will call with updates after morning rounds and after doing physical exams on all their patients.
If you have specific questions or concerns for your pet’s doctor during the day, we will relay your message to the doctor to return your call as soon as possible.
Clear and open communication between you and our team is very important. We ask that you designate one contact person during your pet’s stay to prevent miscommunication.
We will gladly assist you in completing any insurance forms; however, we do ask that you submit all claims yourself. The high volume of incoming and outgoing faxes prevents our client service team from ensuring your claim is sent, as we do not receive fax confirmations.
THE COST OF CARE
Treatment plans: You will be provided with a treatment plan estimating the cost of your pet’s hospital stay. If your pet’s condition changes and requires additional tests or treatments not covered in the initial treatment plan, we will contact you as soon as possible.
Daily financial updates: We recognize that having a sick or injured pet is costly, and we want to keep you abreast of accrued charges. After a doctor has provided you with a medical update, a service coordinator will call with a financial update for the recommended treatment plan.
Payment plans: We offer payment plans through CareCredit, a financial lender. We do not offer payment plans through our hospital. If you are interested in applying for CareCredit, please speak to one of our client service representatives.
Please be sure to check with us before your first visit to find out what forms and other information you will need to bring with you.

PAWS: Pets Are Wonderful Support
Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) is a volunteer-based organization that provides for the comprehensive needs of companion animals for low-income persons with HIV/AIDS and other disabling illnesses, as well as senior citizens. Grants provided through local veterinarians help pet guardians with financial hardship deal with urgent, treatable conditions to prevent needless suffering, euthanasia or surrender of their animal companions.
Visit San Francisco Aid for AnimalsThe San Francisco SPCA
As the fourth oldest humane society in the U.S. and the founders of the No-Kill movement, the SF SPCA has always been at the forefront of animal welfare. As a result of the SF SPCA's efforts and those of their community partners, San Francisco has the lowest euthanasia rate of any major city in the United States. No adoptable dog or cat in San Francisco goes without a home, even if they have medical or other issues.
In 2014 the SF SPCA merged with Pets Unlimited, a like-minded animal welfare nonprofit in Pacific Heights. Their organization included a nonprofit veterinary hospital that provided significant financial assistance to pet guardians in need, as well as a small adoption center. The original SF SPCA campus in the Mission, and the additional campus in Pacific Heights, are now working toward the same shared mission and goals.
VET SOS
VET SOS provides free veterinary care to the companion animals of homeless San Franciscans and links their human guardians with health care services. Operating since 2001, VET SOS is a project of SFCCC's Street Outreach Services (SOS) program.
VET SOS provides free pop-up veterinary clinics 12 times per year using volunteer staffing and a specially equipped mobile outreach van.
By going directly to homeless people - meeting them on their own turf - the VET SOS team builds relationships of trust and breaks down the barriers that keep homeless people and their companion animals from the care they need and deserve.
